Our full-day Waqrapukara Trekking Tour will take you to explore an impressive Inca temple located in the Andes Mountains of Cusco. This fortress, built on the summit of one of the steepest mountains, is an architectural gem surrounded by mystery. This hiking experience will also allow you to explore a less-visited area, taking you off Cusco’s traditional tourist trails.
Waqrapukara is a relatively new tourist attraction whose mysteries have yet to be fully deciphered. The site offers spectacular views of the night sky, filled with constellations, planets, and stars—elements that were fundamental to the Inca worldview. Fortress, sanctuary, and astronomical observatory are some of the interpretations associated with this fascinating monument of classical Inca architecture. It is located at 4,300 meters (14,107 feet) above sea level, on the cliffs of the Apurímac River Canyon, south of Cusco. In July 2017, it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by Peru’s Ministry of Culture.
The Waqrapukara Trek is usually offered as a private tour, with a minimum of 2 people. Travelers undertaking the Waqrapukara trek should be in good physical condition and properly acclimatized to the altitude of the Cusco region. We recommend doing this hike after visiting Machu Picchu.
Travelers should be physically prepared for this journey, as the hike will take approximately 5.5 hours in total, including the round trip. This trek is ideal for people who enjoy walking, appreciating nature, and venturing beyond traditional tourist excursions.
We do not recommend doing the Waqrapukara Trek between January, February, and March due to the heavy rainfall in the region.
