Birdwatching Huayopata: Nature Tour in Cusco

Do you wish to explore one of the most vibrant and least-known ecosystems of the Peruvian Andes? Birdwatching Huayopata represents a unique adventure in the cloud forests located on the eastern slope of Cusco. This two-day journey immerses you in a world of intense colors and fascinating natural sounds. Along the route, you will discover endemic species that only inhabit these special microclimates. Therefore, this program is ideal for nature photographers and lovers of global biodiversity. From the very first moment, you will feel the climatic transition from the snow-capped peaks to the high jungle. Likewise, our specialized guide will help you identify every song and plumage in this earthly paradise.

A Sanctuary of Biodiversity in the Cusco Cloud Forest

This trip represents much more than a simple mountain hike. By choosing Birdwatching Huayopata, you will participate in a high-level scientific and recreational expedition. First, you will ascend to Abra de Málaga to observe high-altitude species. Subsequently, you will descend toward warm valleys filled with orchids, bromeliads, and heliconias. Consequently, this combination of altitudes allows for the sighting of an impressive variety of tanagers, hummingbirds, and raptors. Additionally, you will enjoy the hospitality of an ecolodge designed to integrate perfectly with the natural environment. This experience guarantees a deep connection with Cusco’s wildlife beyond the traditional circuits.

Itinerario

Day 1: Cusco – Abra de Málaga – Ipal Ecolodge

We begin the Birdwatching Huayopata journey very early, at 04:00 am. We will depart from the city of Cusco toward Abra de Málaga, located at 4,230 meters above sea level. From this point, you will admire the eternal snows of the Verónica mountain and the transition of high Andean ecosystems. During the descent, we will search for species such as the Inca Wren and the Sword-billed Hummingbird. Likewise, we will identify raptors like the White-rumped Hawk soaring over the polylepis (queñuales) forests.

At noon, we will arrive at Ipal Ecolodge, situated at 1,600 meters above sea level, to enjoy a nutritious typical lunch. During the afternoon, we will explore the Incatambo Garden, a space with strategic bird feeders. You will be able to photograph the Swallow-tailed Hummingbird and various brightly colored tanagers up close. Consequently, you will take advantage of the golden light to capture professional images of the local fauna. After dinner, we will conduct an optional search for the Tropical Screech-Owl in the lodge gardens. This first night in the high jungle will allow you to rest surrounded by the nocturnal orchestra of the cloud forest.

Day 2: Calquiña Trail – Encounter with the Cock-of-the-rock – Cusco

The second day of Birdwatching Huayopata begins at 06:00 am with a hike along the Calquiña Trail. We will explore a lush rainforest full of ferns and wild orchids. During the tour, we will look for mixed flocks where Flame-faced and Saffron-crowned tanagers stand out. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to observe the majestic Andean Cock-of-the-rock. This bird is the national symbol of Peru and is known for its intense red color and ritual dance.

Likewise, we will identify toucans such as the Blue-banded Toucanet and exotic birds like the Golden-headed Quetzal. After a morning full of successful sightings, we will return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest. Finally, we will begin the return trip to the city of Cusco. We will arrive at approximately 7:00 pm, carrying with us a complete list of the species observed. This expedition concludes with the satisfaction of having explored one of the most biodiverse corners of the planet.
