Choquequirao is a large Inca complex above the Apurímac River canyon. It can only be reached on foot, which makes it one of the least visited and most impressive sites in the region. Its highlights include terraces decorated with llama figures made of white stone.
How to get there
The usual route starts in Cachora, about four hours from Cusco by road. The round-trip hike takes at least four days, with a very steep descent into the canyon and an equally steep climb out.
