Inca Jungle

Biking, rafting, ziplining and hiking to Machu Picchu

The Inca Jungle is the sportiest way to reach Machu Picchu. It combines a downhill bike ride from the high puna grasslands, adventure activities in the cloud forest around Santa Teresa and a hike to Aguas Calientes.

Typical 4-day itinerary

  1. Biking: a downhill ride on the road from Abra Málaga, at over 4,300 m, to Santa María. Optional rafting in the afternoon.
  2. Hiking: a stretch of Inca trail through coffee plantations and fruit orchards to Santa Teresa, with a soak in the Cocalmayo hot springs.
  3. Zipline and hike: an optional zipline over the valley and a hike from Hidroeléctrica, alongside the railroad tracks, to Aguas Calientes.
  4. Machu Picchu: a guided tour of the citadel and return to Cusco.

Who it’s for

  • Young or active travelers looking for adventure and variety.
  • Anyone who couldn’t get an Inca Trail permit.
  • No high-altitude trekking experience needed: most of the route runs through low, temperate areas.

Tips

  • Bring warm clothes for the bike descent and light clothes for the jungle.
  • Wear insect repellent: there are lots of mosquitoes in Santa Teresa.
  • Best time to go: April to October, when the road and the rivers are safer.
