Pueblo de Aguas Calientes entre montañas y el río Urubamba

Aguas Calientes

Machu Picchu Pueblo, your base for visiting the citadel

Aguas Calientes, also called Machu Picchu Pueblo, is the town at the foot of the citadel. Trains from Cusco and Ollantaytambo pull in here, and this is where the buses up to the sanctuary leave from.

Things to do in Aguas Calientes

  • Ride the bus or hike up to Machu Picchu early in the morning.
  • Unwind in the hot springs that give the town its name.
  • Visit the Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum and the botanical garden.
  • Hike to Mandor Waterfall.

Should you spend the night in Aguas Calientes?

Yes, if you want to enter Machu Picchu in one of the first morning time slots or climb Huayna Picchu. A night in town makes the visit far more relaxed than a same-day round trip.
