Waqrapukara (“horn-shaped fortress” in Quechua) is an Inca and pre-Inca site built on a rock formation with two peaks, on the edge of the Apurímac canyon. It’s one of Cusco’s up-and-coming destinations: rarely visited, with high-mountain scenery.
How to get there
It’s in Acomayo province, south of Cusco. The drive takes about 3 to 4 hours, followed by a hike of a couple of hours over high terrain, above 4,000 m. That’s why it’s best to go on a tour, once you’ve acclimatized.
Tips
- Save it for the end of your trip, when you’re acclimatized.
- Bring warm clothes, sunscreen and water: there are no services along the route.
- The best time to go is the dry season, from April to October.
