In this guide
Cusco has two distinct seasons: the dry season, from May to September, and the rainy season, from November to March. April and October are transition months. Because of the altitude, mornings and nights are cold year-round, though the midday sun is warm.
Dry season (May to September)
Clear skies and little rain. This is peak season: more visitors, and tickets sell out sooner. June and July are the coldest months at night, with frost in the higher areas.
Rainy season (November to March)
Frequent rain, especially in the afternoon, and very green landscapes. There are fewer tourists. In February the Inca Trail closes for maintenance, although Machu Picchu stays open.
Best time by activity
- Machu Picchu: year-round; April, May, September and October strike a balance between weather and crowds.
- Inca Trail and Salkantay: April to October.
- Rainbow Mountain and Humantay: April to November.
- Festivals: Inti Raymi is held every June 24.
What to wear
Dress in layers: a thermal shirt, a fleece and a waterproof jacket. Add a hat, gloves and sunscreen, because the sun’s radiation is strong at altitude.
