Tambomachay is an Inca complex devoted to the worship of water, known as “the Bath of the Inca.” Its terraced walls of fine stonework carry spring water through channels and fountains that are still flowing more than 500 years later.
What to see
- The ceremonial fountains, with two twin streams of water.
- The terraced walls with trapezoidal niches.
- Across the road, Puka Pukara (“red fortress”), a tambo, or checkpoint, on the Inca road, named for the reddish color its stones take on at sunset.
How to get there
It’s about 8 km from Cusco, on the road to Pisac: the farthest stop on the City Tour. Many travelers take a taxi to Tambomachay and walk back downhill, past Puka Pukara, Qenqo and Sacsayhuamán.
Admission
Both sites are included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico del Cusco).
